Carcassonne is an incredible fortified town in southern France. The Romans were the first to fortify the town around 100 BC. In 1853 the fortifications were thoroughly restored by architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc and in 1997 it was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
Make sure you watch the video on the map through to the end, as there is an amazing fireworks display over the town's ramparts.
