Twittering Ski Resorts

I've created a new map called Twittering Ski Resorts, that maps ski resorts that use Twitter to give updates on snow conditions. You can navigate to any of the resorts by clicking on the markers on the map. Alternatively you can select a resort from the list in the map sidebar.

Clicking on any of the map markers will load the latest Tweets from the resort and (where available) show the latest webcam image.

Star Viewer Map Update

Added video number 71 to the Star Viewer map.

The latest video comes curtsey of NASA. The video shows an impressive colour composite of spiral galaxy M81 across the electromagnetic spectrum. It combines X-ray data (blue) from the Chandra Observatory, infrared data (pink) from the Spitzer Space Telescope, and an ultraviolet image (purple) from the GALEX satellite, with a visible light (green) Hubble image.

Star Viewer map

I've just added the 70th video to the Star Viewer map. The latest video is an animation of the supernova remnant N 63A.

This violent and chaotic-looking mass of gas and dust is the remains of a massive star that exploded. N 63A is in the nearby galaxy the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Visible from the southern hemisphere, the LMC is an irregular galaxy lying 160,000 light-years from our own Milky Way galaxy.

Shuri Castle, Okinawa

Shuri Castle is a gusuku (Ryu-kyu-an castle) in Shuri, Okinawa. It was the palace of the Ryu-kyu- Kingdom. In 1945, during the Battle of Okinawa, it was almost completely destroyed, with only a few walls standing as high as a few decimeters. In 1992, it was reconstructed on the original site based on photographs, historical records, and memory.

Bowes Museum

The Bowes Museum has a nationally renowned art collection and is situated in the town of Barnard Castle, Teesdale, County Durham, England.

The museum contains an El Greco, paintings by Francisco Goya, Canaletto, Jean-Honoré Fragonard, François Boucher and a sizable collection of decorative art, ceramics, textiles, tapestries, clocks and costumes, as well as older items from local history. A great attraction is the 18th century Silver Swan automaton, which periodically preens itself, looks round and appears to catch and swallow a fish.

Star Map

The Star Map is an animated tour of some of the amazing Hubble and Spitzer telescope imagery as seen in Google Sky. The map animates through a number of galaxies. All you have to do is press 'play' and sit back as the Star Map takes you on a virtual tour of the Universe.

If you like to take a little extra time over your space travel you can always use the Star Viewer map.

Star Viewer Update

I have added the latest Hubblecast video to the Star Viewer map. The latest video looks at NGC 2623.

NGC 2623 appears to be one very bright and bizarre galaxy, but is actually the result of a pair of spiral galaxies, like our own Milky Way, smashing together at incredible speeds.

You can access the video from the sidebar to the left of the map or you can use the 'recently added' link underneath the map.
